The Weekly Czech-Up

Carley is so clever. I love getting her e-mails because her subject lines are always so witty and filled with puns. Reminds me of just 8 short weeks ago when she came to visit us in Carlsbad, NM. She left her notebook on the counter and I glanced at it. It was a list of all the things she needed to get done before she left for the MTC. At the top was the title of said list..."Czech it Twice!" (Underlined twice, of course). She's just so funny! We miss her desperately, but she is doing a work the Lord needs her to do.

HOWDY!!! (I just love saying that) Thank you sooo much for all your wonderful support, I'm the luckiest Sister ever!!! But my missing all of you propels me to make the absolute most of my time here because I am missing out on time with y'all! I prolly brag about y'all too much to my district/zone but I don't care!!!!!!! This week has had a whole lotta ups and downs, not gonna lie... The highs are super high and the lows pretty low, but I wouldn't trade it for anything so I'm loving it!

I had the opportunity to meet my new mission president and his wife on Saturday :D They are AWESOME and sooo nice! Sister McKonkie I immediately loved, her happy spirit is infectious and she is so inspirational! President McKonkie has so much spiritual power. After we all talked to them, I was sooo pumped! But at the same time I feel a lot of urgency and pressure to make the most of my time here. I am learning a lot about myself here.

I never considered myself the type to be like "go, go, go!!" all the time...but I am kinda doing that. I am having to learn to calm down a bit and not beat myself up about things. I tend to grade myself pretty harshly and it was affecting my companionship because my perception of my work affected their outlook. I really love my companions, we are all very different but learn soo much from one another. There are things I have to learn and let-go of, like not being so freaking stubborn!

We have to keep all our feelings "good" so that we can feel the spirit. The spirit is really the fuel for everything, and I am learning how to listen and heed its promptings. That is something I don't feel I am as good at. But my sisters are very in-tune with the spirit, and are very good about making decisions on their feelings. I tend to want to just motor through and "Git' 'ur done" and be as efficient as possible with our time. Its really hard for me not to feel absolutely stressed about the language. There is so much I can't say!

I sooo badly want to carry on a normal conversation, at a pace faster than that of a snail . And to make some PUNS!!!! Oh how I miss those! Gratefully, one of the elders has a knack for wit, and I can relieve some stress via lame jokes. Yesterday we went back and forth and back and forth...using the subject of tic-tacs. It was great fun. It was a moMint of joy and felt fanTacsTic. I am really loving Czech though. I am so grateful for the joy I find in learning it, I cannot wait to combine that with love of the people! I memorized "My Purpose" in Czech and the "First Vision" :)

(Courtney's Note Here: These are the excerpts Carley memorized in Czech)

My Purpose (as a missionary)

Invite others to come unto Christ by helping them receive the restored gospel through faith in Jesus Christ and His Atonement, repentance, baptism, receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost, and enduring to the end.

The First Vision

I saw a pillar of light exactly over my head, above the brightness of the sun, which descended gradually until it fell upon me. . . . When the light rested upon me I saw two Personages, whose brightness and glory defy all description, standing above me in the air. One of them spake unto me, calling me by name and said, pointing to the other—This is My Beloved Son. Hear Him!” (Joseph Smith—History 1:16–17).

Back to her e-mail...

And I'm figuring out the cases. They're tricky. Sunday was beyond wonderful!! I loved the message and cried a lot (a common occurrence here in the MTC I might add, darn spirit keeps gettin' in ma eyes.) Missionary work is evolving and growing and spreading so much joy and bringing more and more people to the Savior! The adapting of the Church to the technological advancements, I feel, further proves that modern-day revelation is powering it. Heavenly Father is the same yesterday, today, and forever. The guidance of a loving Father never ceases, I am so grateful to have this knowledge. I am so grateful for the peace in the Savior I have felt, He comforts and gives me courage. I know that Joseph Smith was a prophet of God and Thomas S. Monson leads our Church in righteousness today. I love the Book of Mormon and I know it is yet another witness of Christ's perfect love. I am so grateful to share this message of hope and joy to the people of Czech and to anyone willing to listen. I am so grateful for the support of my family and friends, I can feel the surges of spiritual power that I know comes from your thoughts and prayers on my behalf. I can't believe I am going on my 5th week being here! AHHH! What the heck?! Time's a'flyin. But I am loving it!!! :)

(Courtney's Note: The following are notes to individual members of our family. I hesitate whether or not to include these every week because sometimes they are a bit personal, but at the same time, it's so much easier to find all the e-mails in one place (on a blog) rather than search through archived e-mails individually...so excuse us if it gets a bit sappy)

Dal, I heard the Heat won, what a shame. And, I read your Mormon.org profile (Courtney's Note: you can check out his profile here: http://mormon.org/me/CGNM/DallasSchoen)  to my district, hope ya don't mind. Had to. SOOOO proud of you. Thankyou for your dearelder! That's awesome that you're already working on the language that will help you sooo much! As far as advice on what to read and study, anything and everything is great. (is that vague enough for ya?) jk. I would practice feeling the spirit in Portuguese, that will be the best motivator and help to you. Getting out of your head and just feeling the words with your heart. I think I recall you saying you started the Book of Mormon again? That's wonderful. Read a new copy and mark all your favorite scriptures and I challenge you to give it to someone before you hit the MTC. :) Hit the mission ground runnin.

Cassidy, I love you and I will ALWAYS be your best friend okay?! Can't get rid of me. Just always be a good example and the Lord will bless you. I want to do Personal Progress with you! (Courtney's Note: Personal Progress is basically a goal-setting and achievement program within the Young Women Organization of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Although designed to be completed by young women ages 12-18, women of all ages are encouraged to try and learn and live by some of the righteous goals outlined, for example, read your scriptures every day for at least 15 minutes and keep a journal of any spiritual promptings. Learn more here: https://www.lds.org/young-women/personal-progress?lang=eng)

I love you and I know you'll find great friends in high school that understand your beliefs (if you need some, just find the band kids!!!!)

Mommacita, you brave soldier. Re-plastering the pool! haha I told everyone that in my class and they are mighty impressed with your extensive skillset, as am I, as always. I am super dee dooper excited about this care-package not gonna lie!! :D Just any touch from home feels heaven-sent!! I love you and miss your voice too :( I miss our time together and how alike we are!!!! (I know. I never recognized how alike we thought until being with my companions!) It's really hard not being with you, but I hope you are getting some good laughs from Cassidy and Dal and Dad too, and church-friends and zumba-friends and all those people you so easily befriend in passing!!! I love you sooo soo sooo much!

Courtney and Cam, I will write you a letter too but just know you are ALWAYS in my thoughts! And I miss you! I loved spending that quality time with you in Carlsbad, and am excited for future visiting-opportunities I will have no matter where you are!

Daaaad??! I miss the tons of puns and the always wise guidance. Thankyou for taking care of my card stuff and I would LOVE those Czech study books!!! I thought they weren't allowed but they are so the more the merrier!!!!! I am just trying to soak up the language and the spirit as much as I possibly can! And thankyou for sharing some of your mission experiences.

I feel like that girl from Magic School Bus that is like, "Well in my old school..." but like "Well in Texas..." or "Well in my family...." haha I love and miss you!

So that's it from Carley this week! She's a doll, isn't she?!

Worked right through her shoes!

Sweet Carley...she didn't have time for much of an e-mail this week because she sent about a dozen pictures each with a long caption for the photo. So, without further adieu, here's her update this week. Make sure you read her captions! They are pretty much her e-mail.

"Thank you [everyone] for the prayers offered in behalf of me, I feel their strength as I go throughout the day. I don't know quite how to describe it but I feel like the spirit lets me know who/where my source of spiritual power derives from sometimes. It's like getting a second wind. In the scriptures it says that His grace is sufficient after all we can do [2 Nephi 25:23 - found in the Book of Mormon] I know this to be true and it makes trusting the Lord so much easier because I don't have to feel like I am ever on my own. But we also have each other for sources of strength to propel us forward."

Poor unfortunate souls!!! They bit the dust. Could I please have another pair that look EXACTLY like these somehow? They were so perfect.

My 'nother pair of shoes also broke....I feel like Dallas going through shoes so quick! But I don't need another pair like these as much. I am down to one pair of shoes-the wonderful black ones Auntie Barbara got  me.
All the Polski sisters, they have been so welcoming

All the Polskis

The Czech Sestri

Dallas!! I found your future language book in a classroom!!

I may or may not LOVE this stuff. True story. (Courtney's note: I had to zoom in really close to see what she is holding...it's the Walmart Brand sugar-free Cherry Pomegranate water bottle drink mix...can you say "easy to please?")

Me and Siostra H (Courtney's note: Yep, "siostra" not "sestra", I guess "siostra" means "sister" in Polish?)

Me and Siostra M. She's leaving Monday, so sad for me, happy for her!

Me and the Czech Republic in our room. It shows all the castles

Me with Siostra O, Love her!!!  (Polish)

My fellow Texans, going to the Adriatic North Mission. Sister P (blonde) and Sister M (brunette)

Siostra W, She is hysterical!!!
Oh, and if you want a real treat, Carley sang in the choir at yesterday's broadcast, "The Work of Salvation"!  I couldn't find her in the sea of choir members and missionaries, (sheesh, there were a TON!), but if you want to see just how many missionaries are in the Provo MTC, click this link and it'll take you to the broadcast (or just look at the screen shot I took below).

Picture This!

We got a ton of pictures from Sestra Schoen this week, and also a very desperate plea for letters sent via “dear elder.” I explained in the previous post entitled “my brain o’er floweth” how to send a dear elder step by step, so please, PLEASE check it out and send Carley a message if you have time. (reminder: www.dearelder.com is a website where you basically type and submit a letter as you would an e-mail, then for FREE the MTC prints your typed letter, puts it in an envelope and delivers it to the missionaries. It’s free, and it’s just like sending a letter in the mail minus the cost of a stamp and Carley claims that dear elders are just the best thing! So have compassion on my sweet sister and send her a dear elder if you can spare some time.)

Here’s her letter this week…

So I will try to cram in as much as I can right now. But this silly computer refuses to email more than one picture at a time.

This week has been wonderful and stressful (you are prolly—insert Courtney’s note: Carley replaces probably with prolly because she’s cute like that—going to get pretty annoyed with me repeating that but hey, it’s the truth).

Carley's first day at the MTC!

Everyone in Carley's "zone." These missionaries are all learning and studying together, but they are going to different parts of the world to serve the Lord.

In class

Enjoying the outdoors at the MTC. I had no idea they kept the grounds so beautifully kept!

She's a missionary!

Her sestri

Carley and two of her sestri that will be going to the Czech Republic with her. Sestra J and Sestra H. (not sure which is which)

Only Carley would notice that a tree on the MTC grounds smells like butterscotch. So strange, but we love her.

Learning in the MTC.

Carley loves going to the temple (see the previous post for more info on the temple)

Carley probably wanted to take this picture instead of be in it because she wanted to be in the sun, unlike those healthy folk chillin' in the shade.

These are the elders in Carley's zone. I think Carley has a special place in her heart for all these young men because she knows Dallas will be in the ranks in less than 4 months.

On with Carley's letter...

We finished teaching Honza, and now we are teaching 2 "investigators" simultaneously, Rene and Krystof. Rene is the “golden investigator,” he asks the BEST questions that make it so easy to invite the spirit and bear our testimonies. Krystof, however, is sorta lame, not gonna lie... He doesn’t seem interested at all and gives us little or nothing to work with. We also had what’s called TRC where returned missionaries come and you teach them as them not as any pretend character. We actually for the first lesson had to teach the Slovak teacher...so I understand Slovak sorta too!! Weird. Not like we are fluent. I am struggling a lot, but moving forward, so that’s good. But it still drives me bonkers not being able to easily express myself and lookin’ like a fool trying to act out words I can't remember.

Again, I LOOOOOVE the gals in my zone! But I’m sad because the polish sisters (going to Poland) are leaving in 10 days! I have become the hairdresser and stylist in the hall and I love it :) Reminds me of when I was section leader in band and did the girls’ braids. Our district elders are a hoot. So many different personalities but they are all wanting to learn so badly. I really like my teachers too, they’re great. Oh! And me and my companions (Sestra J. and H.) are singing in the MTC choir for this leadership training thing on BYUtv! Its on June 23rd I believe... but watch for me!!! :)

Please encourage people to dearelder me, I really appreciate it!

So there you have it! She's happy and healthy and loving her experience as a missionary!

"My Brain O'er Floweth"

Thank you so much for your dearElders! Whats superdeedooper awesome is that they print them out and we get them usually a day after you send them but we just have to wait for Friday to write back, so PLEASE keep 'em a'comin!!! I love them ever so much.

Insert Courtney's Note: Dear Elder is a mailing system that allows you to type a letter online, then submit it to the Missionary Training Center. The administration there prints off the e-mail, puts it in an envelope and delivers it to the missionary of your choice. If you would like to send something to Carley, here is the information you need.

Under "Send Stuff" Click on "Provo MTC (Free)"

Fill out the selected fields with the information in the picture left (unit #, mission code, departure date)

Type your letter and click "Send"

Now, back to Carley's letter...

So I have been here for over a week now. WOO! only 8 more to go!! Actually, I have a feeling the time is going to fly by so I better git goin. So funny thing about being here in the Utah, I have become that stereotypical Texan that won't stop gabbing about their state's supreme awesomeness. I shall not be ashamed of the...state of Texas *(and the gospel of Christ). I mean it's fairly easy for people to catch, what with my Texas watch and Texas key-chain and the classic "y'all" that seems to cause some inquiry. Anywho, this past week has been amazing and crazy. I feel like Im always going, but I LOVE it. Its like when you're on a treadmill and you bump up the speed and your hauling it and you're verging on just biting it but your will keeps you going and you're proud of yourself every moment you do. That's what its like.

I wake up at around 5 a.m. and am constantly moving until bed. I've never thought of myself as an "early bird" but I like the jump start to the day. Who woulda thunk? They have sisters-only workout classes in the mornings at 6 a.m. and I love those! Yoga, kick-boxing, pilates, and toning. It's no zumba...but I'll take it ;). I have sincerely loved the sisters in my zone, they are so motivating and inspirational. They are all from the states but are going to those countries mentioned in my last letter if I didn't make that clear. I have made such wonderful friendships here and its such a blessing. We laugh all the time, and its so awesome that they all have the same foundation of faith and focus on their future that I do.

The language is coming along... We have taught 5 lessons in Czech to a PI (not personal investigator, Progressing Investigator) named Honza. (insert Courtney's note: Carley and her fellow "sestri" are role-playing with a fake investigator...it took me a minute to realize this). We told him, Honza, of his Heavenly Father's love for him, how to pray to receive answers to his questions, the importance of his Savior, Jesus Christ, and taught him the importance of baptism. We would need to continue teaching him, but now come to find out, we are getting TWO new investigators and Honza is now going to be our teacher. So he'll get to explain all the wonderful silly mistakes we made. Yay. I'd like to say they were smooth and easy sailing, but alas, this is not the case. It was more like czhenglish. I'm still getting the hang of things and work out the kinks but I am getting more and more comfortable with the schedule and my companions.

When I speak czech I may or may not sound like I'm beat-boxing. Oh!! and exciting news. "No" is the shortened form of "Ano" which means yes... that's gonna throw me for a loop a bit. I really love my class, the elders (starsi) are hysterical. They're so dynamic and excited to work and learn. But they're kind of like puppies so they have a tendency to lose their focus. One elder's birthday was today and we sang to him in the laundry room. He starts every sentence with "Little known fact..." (Cliff Claybon, lol) and then there's another elder who is an actor. His role model; Jim Carrey. He recited and acted out the Grinch yesterday so we found a loophole to watching TV, lol. Our teachers are great, Sestra W. who is super nice and sweet and a tiny thing...yet plays rugby? And Bratr M. who's cool too. (insert Courtney's note: I removed full last names for their privacy)

It's been a whirlwind of an adventure so far and I haven't even left the states yet...what??
But I hope to make the absolute most of this time. I have found so much peace and comfort and strength in prayer. Never have I found it so integral in my day , but it seems like I never stop all day. It's continuous. Because I have never needed it this much I think. Sometimes I get a bit down on myself about the language and want to pound my head against the wall repeatedly (which not gonna lie...I may occassionally do.) But they come in waves and it seems like each time it crashes on my shore I get a bit stronger more able to withstand the next one. And I know that it is through the Lord that I can do this.

Alma 29:8-9 (insert Courtney's note: Alma is a book of scripture in the Book of Mormon, like how Matthew is a book in the New Testament. Mormons believe in the Bible and in the Book of Mormon)

For behold, the Lord doth agrant unto ball nations, of their own nation and ctongue, to teach his word, yea, in wisdom, all that he dseeth fit that they should have; therefore we see that the Lord doth counsel in wisdom, according to that which is just and true.
I know that which the Lord hath commanded me, and I glory in it. I do anot bglory of myself, but I glory in that which the Lord hath commanded me; yea, and this is my glory, that perhaps I may be an instrument in the hands of God to bring some soul to repentance; and this is my joy.

Studying the scriptures has been such a blessing too, with things I didn't realize that I needed more than I did.

This is the Provo, Utah, temple. There are 141 operating temples world-wide.

Today I went to the temple which gave me even more peace as usual. (insert Courtney's note here: for Latter-day Saints, the temple is the most sacred place on earth. If you want to learn about what goes on in the temple, you can learn more here: https://www.lds.org/church/temples/why-we-build-temples/what-happens-in-temples?lang=eng)

A lot of the people from my zone have taken or speak fluent, German. So everyone calls me Sestra Shern. Like it would be pronounced in Germany. Kinda interesting but I have quickly grown accostumed to it and respond to it now.

Overall, its been a great week and I am excited to include more specific information when I get better about using my measely hour of email time.
Thankyou to everyone for your prayers and support, I love and miss Y'ALL!!!!

The Chick's in the MTC!

So, we got our first e-mail from Sister Schoen! (For those of you wondering, if you see "Sestra Schoen" it is because that is how you say "sister" in Czech.) She is in the MTC right now, or the Missionary Training Center, in Provo, Utah.

This was Monday night, right after Carley was "set apart" as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

We are totally pumped to have heard from her so soon, but honestly it couldn't be soon enough. Cassidy was the big crier before Carley took off (she broke out in tears 3 different times on Sunday) but I think it's hit my mom the hardest since Carley actually took off on Wednesday morning. BUT, I haven't heard my mom as happy as she sounded this morning when I talked to her on the phone and she frantically asked, "Did you get the e-mail? Isn't it it so sweet?! It's the sweetest e-mail I've ever read. She wrote a paragraph to each of us, and even though she gave me a laundry list of things to do, it's the best e-mail I've ever read." I was like, "Hi to you too mom, what e-mail are you talking about?" Haha, she was so pumped, almost as pumped and excited as Carley sounds in her e-mail!

Carley's e-mail is just a lovely glimpse into the cheerful life of "the chick in czech/the mtc." Here are a few highlights.

From: Carley Schoen
Date: May 31, 2013, 2:45:19 PM CDT
Subject: AHHHHHH!!!!!!! :D
Hey Family!!!

So turns out I CAN email!!! But I dont have near as much time as I wish, so I am going to cram as much as possible in this time, so excuse all the typos.
First off, I LOVE YOU ALL SO MUCH. I miss you like crazy!

But....IT HAS BEEN AWESOME. SO MUCH CAPS!!!

I gave the guy seated next to me on the plane a pass along card. Woop!

I love my Sestri (sisters). We are a trio because we are the only sisters speaking Czech. My Zone is also really awesome, it includes: Croatia (Adriatic North Mission), Poland, Turkey (I think), Slovakia, Bulgaria, and a couple other that I cant remember right now. We played kickball all together yesterday, it was fun. The MTC is an awesome experience and I know I am going to LOVE it, and Dallas I am 100% confident you will too. I am already super close with my Czechees and just the whole atmosphere is so exciting.

Its difficult too, not gonna lie. You feel so scatterbrained being everywhere at once and having so much expected from you, plus a ton of rules you can't break. My sestri are, Sestra Huggard (the one I knew from facebook) who is from American Fork, Utah, and Sestra Jackson who is from Ohio. Both are super sweet and we get along really well. We have 6 girls living in one room so its a bit cramped! But they are all really fun and waaaay different experience than my college roommate experiences. Plus the whole constantly having to be together thing has been really fun... especially when we all take turns forgetting something and end up having to go back to the room a bunch. That gets annoying but oh well!

Sestra Jackson got sick last night and I had to leave our District meeting to take care of her. But it's okay, I'll learn the material covered later and I'm trying to put my companions first. That's what I am learning, how to be less selfish. We had a bunch of training meetings...yesterday? I think then....it's all a blur now. But anywho, the classes had an "investigator" and missionaries would role-play teach them as the class watched then discussed what had happened. Well, in the last class, the designated missionaries had to leave so the teacher chose us to teach them out of the whole class, so we had to go up there with the mic and teach this woman, Helly. It feels so real though, they do suuuuuch a great job acting. What I learned though was that while I have a tendency to want to kind of overtake the discussion because I really like what I am thinking of saying, when I didn't and I let the other sisters speak, the spirit was so strong and I learned, too. So I have gotten alot better about allowing them the opportunity to share.

Sestra Jackson shared a very personal story with Helly, but the entire class (which was BIG...though don't ask me how many were there! lol)--insert Courtney's note here: Carley has many talents, but estimating time, quantity, or size is not her forte--and the spirit was tangible. Then after we were done, Helly, who was actually a recent convert shared how much Sestra Jackson's comment had helped her understand something she had been struggling with. So it's not necessarily what YOU teach but what the SPIRIT teaches.

We will be diving more into the language tomorrow, but already we have a Progressing Investigator (PI) named Hanza (who only speaks in Czech) that we have to teach TONIGHT. Freaking out just a tad, but we have already learned how to bare a simple testimony (svedectvi) which is great and I cant wait to learn to pray. So we are going to have to rely HEAVILY on the spirit.
I miss you all so very much and I will be sending a ton of pics next week (Friday is our P-day). We went to the temple today (yay!!) and I saw David Todd, err Elder Todd and it was fun. Everyone just smiles and waves at each other all day and are so happy.

Dad, thankyou for droppin me off at the airport, that was one of the hardest moments of my life but I KNOW it will be the most rewarding of any "See you later's" I will give.

Mom, I love you!!!! I cannot wait to hear about your week, I miss your friendship and the jokes we used to crack together. Here...the jokes are not quite the same, but I promise I wont turn into a complete Molly--insert Courtney's note here: "Molly" is a term we Mormons use to refer to the most strict and uptight of fellow Mormons as in "Molly Mormon", the male equivalent is "Peter" or "Peter Priesthood"-- I hope you are doing well, how are the houses you are working on going? I want to know about your week so please tell me!! You are in my thoughts and prayers <3

Courtney, I will prepare a better something for next week I promise, but do you mind summarizing this a bit to put something on my blog? If not, no worries and we can wait till next week.
Cam, again Happy Birthday, sorry it got lost in my departure time.

Dallas, I freaking miss you buddy. Especially having these elders here because they are all about your age and sometimes I see glimpses of you and I know that you will be a fantastic missionary!!!! I am sooooo excited for you!! You will love the MTC experience, even in a different place, it's the spiritual infusion...gets to ya. Insert Courtney's note here: Dallas reports to the Sao Paulo, Brazil MTC, not the MTC in Provo.
Cassidia, you are the SWEETEST. I love you and I hope you have a great summer. How is the whole animal shelter thing coming along? Tell me how you are!
I cant wait to hear back from y'all!! (btw when I say "y'all" people like freak out for some strange reason).

My address for the MTC is
Sister Carley Jordan Schoen
JUL29 CZE-SLVK
2007 N 900 E Unit 90
Provo, UT 84602

And you can write me using DearElder.com too!!!!!
I love y'all soooooo much!!!! Write you soon and next week I will load a ton of pics just havent figured out how to do that yet!

Oh and Dad, I would like my missionary scripture (for the missionary board at the stake center) to be Doctrine and Covenants 31:3. I LOVE IT!!!!!

3 Lift up your heart and rejoice, for the hour of your mission is come; and your tongue shall be loosed, and you shall declare glad tidings of great joy unto this generation.
And Mommy, could you send me my chevron flip flops (I need shower shoes) and that robe? and maybe if you can find them, my gray sweat pants from my to be moved stuff? its kinda cold in my room and those would work great for P days, they should be half-way down in the tall box. Y'all are the best family IN THE WORLD. And I miss you like the dickens.

Milute
Sestra Schoen :)
